What is a ceramic coating? A ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that chemically bonds to your vehicle’s clear coat, creating a hard, semi-permanent protective layer over the paint. Unlike wax or sealant which sit on top of the paint and wear off, ceramic coating fuses with the surface at a molecular level. The result is a coating that repels water, resists contaminants, adds significant gloss, and protects the paint for years rather than months.
How long does ceramic coating last? It depends on the product and how well the car is maintained. Our entry-level Tier I coating provides around 1 year of protection. Our Tier II covers 2–3 years. Our top-tier Tier III coating is rated for up to 8 years with proper care. The biggest factors that affect longevity are how often the car is washed, whether it’s garaged, and whether you avoid automatic car washes with abrasive brushes. A properly maintained ceramic-coated car will easily hit the upper end of those ranges.
What does ceramic coating actually protect against? UV rays that cause paint fading and oxidation, water spots, bird droppings, tree sap, road tar, brake dust, and environmental contaminants. It also adds a layer of resistance against light swirl marks and minor scratches. It won’t stop rock chips or deep scratches — for that you need paint protection film — but for everyday environmental protection it’s significantly more effective than wax or sealant.
Do I need paint correction before ceramic coating? In most cases yes, and we always check before recommending a package. Ceramic coating bonds to whatever condition the paint is in at the time of application — so any swirl marks, scratches, or oxidation underneath will be locked in permanently. If your paint is already in good shape, minimal prep is needed. If there’s visible damage, we’ll recommend the appropriate level of correction first. This is one of the most important parts of the process and where a lot of shops cut corners. We don’t.
How long does ceramic coating take to apply? The prep work is the most time-consuming part. A basic coating with minimal prep takes 1–2 days. Our Tier III package which includes full two-step paint correction before coating typically takes 2 full days. We ask customers to drop the car off rather than wait — there’s no way to do this properly under time pressure.
Can I apply ceramic coating myself? DIY ceramic coating kits exist but professional-grade coatings — which is what we use — aren’t available to the public and require proper preparation, controlled conditions, and experience to apply correctly. An improperly applied coating can cure with high spots, streaks, or trapped contamination underneath. At that point removing it is significantly harder than applying it was. If you’re investing in ceramic coating it’s worth having it done right.
How do I maintain a ceramic-coated car? The main rules are: wash regularly using the two-bucket method or foam cannon with a pH-neutral soap, avoid automatic car washes with rotating brushes, and dry properly with a clean microfiber. Beyond that it’s genuinely low maintenance — dirt and water bead off much more easily than an uncoated car. We give every customer specific care instructions when they pick up their vehicle.
Is ceramic coating worth it? For most car owners who care about their vehicle’s appearance and plan to keep it for more than a couple of years — yes. The protection lasts years instead of months, the car is significantly easier to keep clean, and it preserves the paint from the kind of UV damage and environmental wear that’s expensive to fix later. If you’ve just had paint correction done, coating is the only way to protect that investment long term. If you’re on the fence, the question to ask yourself is: what will it cost to repaint this car in 10 years versus what does a coating cost today?
