FAQ Exterior Paint Correction and protection

What is paint correction? Paint correction is the process of removing surface defects from a car’s clear coat using machine polishers and professional compounds. Swirl marks, scratches, oxidation, water spots, and general dullness are all clear coat defects that polishing can remove or significantly reduce. The result is paint that looks dramatically cleaner, deeper, and more reflective — often better than it looked when the car was new.

What causes swirl marks and paint damage? Mostly improper washing. Automatic car washes with spinning brushes are one of the worst offenders — they put thousands of fine scratches into the clear coat every single time. Low-quality sponges, dirty wash mitts, and rough drying towels do the same thing over time. Environmental factors like bird droppings, tree sap, and UV exposure also degrade the clear coat if they’re not addressed promptly.

What’s the difference between Level 1 and Level 2 paint correction? Level 1 is a single-step polish that removes around 30–50% of surface defects. It’s the right choice for cars in decent shape that need refreshing — light swirling, minor dullness, and mild scratches. Level 2 is a two-step process that uses a more aggressive cutting compound first to remove heavier defects, followed by a finishing polish to restore gloss. It removes 80% or more of defects and is the right choice for cars with significant paint damage, heavy swirling, or older vehicles that haven’t been properly maintained. If your car has scratches you can feel with your fingernail, Level 2 is what you need.

Will paint correction remove all the scratches on my car? Not always — and we’ll tell you honestly what to expect before we start. Scratches that haven’t broken through the clear coat can be polished out. Scratches that have cut through to the base coat or primer can’t be removed by polishing alone — they’d require touch-up paint or a respray. We measure paint thickness before starting and assess what can safely be corrected without thinning the clear coat too much. Honesty upfront saves everyone’s time.

How long does paint correction last? The correction itself is permanent — once defects are removed they’re gone. What determines how long it stays looking good is how the car is maintained afterward. Improper washing will reintroduce swirl marks relatively quickly. That’s why we always recommend applying a ceramic coating after paint correction — it protects the corrected surface and makes the car significantly easier to wash without causing new damage.

How long does paint correction take? Level 1 typically takes 6–8 hours for a standard car. Level 2 takes anywhere from 8–15 hours depending on the size of the vehicle and the severity of the paint damage. We work panel by panel under proper lighting, checking progress constantly. It’s not something that can be rushed and done properly at the same time.

How much does paint correction cost in Maryland? Level 1 starts at $350–$450 for small vehicles, $370–$500 for mid-size cars and SUVs, and $400–$600 for larger vehicles. Level 2 is included in our Tier II and Tier III ceramic coating packages, or can be booked as a standalone service — contact us for a quote on your specific vehicle. We serve customers throughout Montgomery County including Germantown, Gaithersburg, Rockville, Damascus, and surrounding areas.

Should I get ceramic coating after paint correction? We strongly recommend it. Paint correction removes the defects but leaves the clear coat bare and unprotected. Without a coating, new swirl marks will start appearing within weeks of normal washing. Ceramic coating locks in the correction and keeps the paint protected for years. Most customers who invest in Level 2 correction go ahead with coating — it’s the only way to protect what you’ve just paid to restore.
